Default 47re Problem - 3/4 shift hunting. Fixed it, but nervous. Need Advice....

Truck is a 98 Quad cab 2500 4x4 with a 47re trans. Truck as 210K miles, is stock and the 5.9 runs flawless. Bought it two years ago and trans was represented as rebuilt by a Dodge dealer, but no receipts. Truck has run well for 2 years. It was always a little late going from 3rd to 4th gear, but not bad. Fluid is nice and red, smells fine. Kicks down fine and the TC locks up and releases fine. No trans slipping. Don't tow much with the truck or carry anything heavy.

Over the past 6 months, it has started to hunt when shifting from 3 to 4 - up/down, up/down until about 40 when the TC locks up. Does this less when fully warmed up.

Searched the archives and thought it might be the TPS and/or TV cable adjustment. Checked the TPS and it put out .8V at rest. Drilled the mounting holes and was able to adjust it to 1.25V at rest. Sweeps OK and no voltage spikes as it moves. No difference in how the trans shifts.

Adjusted the slack out of the TV cable and the truck would not shift into 4th. Gradually put slack back in the cable and was able to get a better 3-4 shift with no hunting. If I put more slack in, the 1-2 shift seems harder - like a jolt.

Put the TV cable back to where the 1-2 shift is OK and the 3-4 shift is OK. but now I have about 1/4 inch slack in the cable. Is this OK or did I just put a bandaid on a deeper problem?

Advice appreciated.

Thanks...Boatman

You just put on a band-aid on the problem. Looks like your transmission is not doing well. If the truck is running well try looking into getting a new transmission. If it has been always getting stuck it is not a good sign and you don't want it to break on you while your driving.
