I just want to make sure I got this down before I start. To change my fuel filter I spin off the old one, fill the new with fuel, let it soak in, fill some more till its all soaked in, then put it on, crack injector lines and crank until I get just fuel coming out. This sound about right? Did I forget anything and is there going to be fuel going all over when I take the old filter off? Thanks guys.

 

correct. I dont crack my injectors I just use the bleed off with a knife and crank the truck still fuel comes out. But we all have are own ways

 

My step dad/mechanic said crack the injectors, plus that might be easier unless I can figure out a way to be inside cranking and outside at the bleed valve thing since I'm doing this by myself.

On the new filter, do I wet the seal like on an oil filter or do I want to keep it dry?

no need to crack injectors. and iff u fill the filter all the way to the top, normally u wont even have to push in the schrader vavle on the housing.when i replace mine i start the truck after and hold around 1200 rpm, to work it threw the air. never had an issue


so crank it being outside, u jump the soloniod on the pass fender with the key off and truck in neutral with parking brake set.

 

Just get a wire and touch bolt to bolt on it? I knew you could do that, just wasn't real sure how.

 

Starting with a warm motor will make it a bit easier. If you fill the filter all the way up, it wont take long to get the truck going. It usually only takes me 2 tries before it fires up. If you dont have extra diesel fuel laying around, you can also fill the filter with a bottle of Diesel Kleen or ATF.

 

Got the filter on today, well, I guess yesterday being as its 1 am. The hardest part was getting the old one off as it was backwards, right=loose left=tighten, at least from the front of the truck. Put the new one on, hit the valve a couple times to bleed what air I could before cranking, got in and she popped off on the first try! I think that had something to do with charging the batteries the night before Thanks for the help guys.

 

When you wrote about taking off the old filter you said, right = loose and left = tighten when standing in front of the truck. Did you mean that was how your filter was ON or that is how you take it off. You mentioned yours was on backwards. I can't get mine off and wanted to make sure I'm taking it off in the correct direction. I have a 1986 Ford 6.9 diesel truck. Thank you.

 

I have never cracked any lines open and I don't usually fill the filter before I Install it. I start with a warmed up engine.I usually don't have anything clean to pour in the new filter so it goes on empty. Start it and hold it around 2500 rpm. Sometimes it will burble some. Other times it may die.

If it dies crank it 5-8 seconds and it will start up,run funky a few seconds then cleans up.
